How to create a bootable MicroSD card with factory setting?

In this tutorial we will explain how to write firmware image to microSD card. You will need microSD or SD with microSD adapter card reader.

We will use Bitmain Antminer S2 image: antMiner_A8_20140410.img

In most cases you do not need any kind of preparation for the microSD card itself but it is good rule of thumb to format to FAT partition type.

Windows with Win32diskimager

On Windows this procedure is pretty straightforward. Put your microSD card to card reader. Verify in my computer that card is present and healthy.

Now it is time to run Win32diskimager.

Select your image file and your destination device.

Now you need to click on Write and that is all.

After a couple of seconds or minutes depending on image file size and speed of card reader and microSD itself you have prepared system on your microSD.

MAC OS X with terminal

On MAC OS X you have several options. You can use third party application like ApplePi-Baker. Besides that you can always fire up your terminal and hit a few commands. Put your microSD card to card reader. Verify in disk utility that card is present and healthy.

You need to be in directory where your image is located or you need to write complete path to your image on last command

First we need to find exact name of SD card on your system with this command:

diskutil list

Now we need to unmount it from system:

diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1

And last thing that we need to do is to write image on microSD card:

sudo dd bs=1m if=antMiner_A8_20140410.img of=/dev/disk1

After a couple of seconds or minutes depending on image file size and speed of card reader and microSD itself you have prepared system on your microSD.

Linux (Ubuntu 14.10) with terminal

Put your microSD card to card reader. Verify in my computer that card is present and healthy.

You need to be in directory where your image is located or you need to write complete path to your image on last command

First we need to find exact name os SD card on your system with this command:

sudo fdisk -l

Now we need to unmount it from system:

umount /dev/sdb1

And last thing that we need to do is to write image on microSD card:

sudo dd bs=1M if=antMiner_A8_20140410.img of=/dev/sdb1

After a couple of seconds or minutes depending on image file size and speed of card reader and microSD itself you have prepared system on your microSD.

Windows with HDDRawCopy

Process is pretty straightforward and easy to do. First insert your microSD card in your card reader. Check in my computer that your card is present and healthy. In most cases you do not need any kind of preparation for the microSD card itself but it is good rule of thumb to format to FAT partition type.

Open HDDRawCopy

Select source file, in our case it is: s5 Jan 7 Image.imgc and click continue

 

Now we need to select destination drive, in this case that is Generic USB SD Reader and click continue

Only thing left to do is to click on START and wait process to be finished.

After a couple of seconds or minutes depending on image file size and speed of card reader and microSD itself you have prepared system on your microSD.
